Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 13:35:45 -0600 From: pwtls@UNO.EDU Subject: Position Available: Chair of Technical Services (fwd) POSITION AVAILABLE Position: Chair, Technical Services Department Duties: The Chair is responsible for the overall progress and quality of support offered by the units in the Technical Services Department, for providing leadership in the units' continued development, and contributing leadership to the development of the library as a whole. The units in Technical Services are Automation, Cataloging, Collection Management, Current Periodicals/Bindery, Order Section, and Serials Sections. Additional responsibilities include (1) working with individuals and units to set goals and to plan for their implementation and assessment, (2) evaluating the potential use of new services and technologies, (3) oversight and participation in various aspects of departmental personnel management, including position descriptions, hiring, training, and evaluations, and (4) monitoring of the relevant wage, supply, and materials budgets. The chair may also participate in other appropriate departmental activities as time, need, and expertise may dictate. The chair reports to the Dean of Library Services and serves as a member of the library's Administrative Cabinet, the Technology Implementation Group, and other library, university, and professional committees or working groups. Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program; a minimum of five years of experience in one or more technical service areas at a medium sized or larger academic institution, including several years of progressively responsible experience in managing a technical service unit; experience working with a major automated system, such as NOTIS; demonstrated familiarity with a bibliographic utility, such as OCLC; demonstrated training and supervisory skills; expertise with standard office software as well as experience with web and other electronic resources and services; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English; ability to work with diverse groups in an urban academic setting. Preferred: Experience supervising librarians in an academic institution; evidence of interest in publication and professional activities; experience developing web-based services. Salary & Rank: $40,000 to $45,000 at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank, depending on qualifications and experience.
