Subject: POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ELECTRONIC ACCESS/SERIALS LIBRARIAN.  The University of Southern
Mississippi-Gulf Coast seeks a creative, energetic librarian to provide
enhanced access to serials (electronic and print) and networked
information.
RESPONSIBILITIES:  Evaluate potential electronic subscriptions, manage all
Serials unit activities and staff (1 full-time support staff), including
ordering and renewal of subscriptions.  Act as contact person for faculty
on issues involving serials and electronic access, and participate in
setting policies and priorities.  Keep abreast of serials acquisition
trends, and evaluate the potential use of new services and technologies.
Train faculty and staff in the use of electronic resources, troubleshoot
library electronic resources, and develop and maintain web sites that
enhance access to information resources. Assist with reference desk
coverage including night and weekend rotation, and participate in
bibliographic instruction program and collection development.
REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS, relevant professional experience in serials
operations in an academic library; demonstrated ability to manage
operations, solve complex problems, and supervise support staff; strong
interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written; skill in
microcomputer applications; demonstrated knowledge of trends in access to
digital information; knowledge of HTML; ability to work independently and
in collaboration with others; and ability to work effectively in a changing
environment and to provide leadership in matters relating to electronic
access to information resources. Librarians hold tenure-track, 12-month
positions and faculty status, and are expected to meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Employment is contingent on the
ability to work in the United States.
DESIRABLE:  Knowledge of WindowsNT and automated library systems.
The library serves about 1700 students and 50 faculty. It provides a
variety of networked and Internet-accessible databases, as well as public
Internet access.
The library is in the process of migrating to a web-based integrated
library system and constructing a new $9 million library building. The job

SALARY:  commensurate with qualifications and experience.
