Subject: Collection of record

Dear Serialisters,
My administration has asked me to help determine the
components of our library's "collection of record." Should
magazines and newspapers be considered part of the "collection of
record?" We are a medium-sized public library that does not bind
our periodicals. We do not keep periodicals indefinitely and receive
them in a variety of formats--paper, microform and electronic. Most
of the agencies to which I report statistics ask for separate figures
for periodicals, so I did not think they would be part of the
"collection of record". If they are, how are they counted? By title,
piece, volume? If anyone has any light to shed on this issue,
please email me directly or respond to the list.

Thanks,
Martha Hess
