The Branch Libraries are the largest branch library system in the country and serve people in the New York metropolitan area through their 85 branches in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The Research Libraries are one of the great libraries in the world, serving scholars and researchers throughout the world and consisting of four research libraries: The Humanities and Social Sciences Library, the Science, Industry and Business Library, the Performing Arts Library, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. For more information, please visit our website at: http://www.nypl.org/libraries.html The Research Libraries have a collection of close to 350,000 serials and more than half of them have on-line records. The Library catalogs on RLIN or OCLC and loads the records into its OPAC, an Innovative Interface Inc. system. The Library participates in BIBCO, NACO, and CONSER. Under supervision of a senior member of the Serials Cataloging Section, catalogs serials in a variety of languages and formats with a focus on Eastern European and Baltic materials. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print serials, microform serials, CD-ROMs, new formats including electronic materials, and government documents. Performs authority work including creating and updating NACO records and local maintenance utilizing the Innovative Interfaces Inc. system. To qualify, candidates must possess an ALA accredited MLS. Knowledge of current principles and methods of serials cataloging and processing including AACR2r, CONSER, USMARC formats, LCSH, and other cataloging tools. Knowledge of bibliographic utilities; OCLC and RLIN preferred; knowledge of automated library systems; Innovative preferred. Excellent knowledge of one or more Eastern European/Baltic languages and working knowledge of one major Western European language. Ability to work well in changing environments as well as independently or as part of a team. Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
