Re: Newspapers on microfilm Julia Franklin 02 Jun 1999 13:24 UTC

Just My 2 cents worth...but...There are times when patrons want to use the
classified section of a newspaper to do research into housing prices, job
opportunities, and apartment rental pricing. Also the ads would give them
a feel of cost of living in a city. From an archival stand point, the
ads and the classified sections give a researcher a feel for the culture
by providing the prices and the hot items for that time. We at ISL do
take out the ads from newspapers from other states, but then we do not
archive the newspapers or have them on microfilm, but in going out into
the reading room, I know people are using the classified sections as much
as any other section of the newspapers.

>>From a financial standpoint, the cost of the Library edition being half
that of the record edition is a factor.

Just my 2 cents worth

We are considering obtaining microfilm for a couple newspapers,
particularly the Los Angeles Times. The UMI catalog lists a library
edition and a record edition. Our UMI rep says the library edition does
not include advertising and the classifieds.

Can someone advise me whether there are other distinctions we need to know
about? We want to be able to access the contents via the paper's website
as well as UMI's Newspaper Abstracts. The record edition costs twice as
much as the library edition.
