POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TITLE: Assistant Head of Acquisitions and Serials Librarian DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an energetic and creative individual who is adept with current library technologies to innovatively manage and facilitate the delivery of web-based access to serials and to support traditional serials collections and services. The person selected for this position will work closely with the serials units, which receive and claim all serial library materials and provide service for current periodicals and microforms collections at service desks in both the Tompkins-McCaw and the James Branch Cabell libraries. The incumbent will serve as the serials expert for licensing, ordering, receiving, housing, and public service issues and will actively support the further incorporation of electronic serials into the collections through frequent consultation and coordination with Cataloging staff, with the Electronic Resources Coordinator in each Library's public service division, and with selecting librarians to provide effective access to serials in print and electronic formats. Particularly important to the Library is working with an individual who has the vision and technological expertise to help lead the library in the ongoing transformation of its scholarly journals to electronic format. The position will also ensure effective use of the NOTIS serials module; develop plans, policies, and procedures; monitor workflow, hire and evaluate staff, coordinate training; demonstrate continuing scholarship and professional growth; contribute to accomplishment of library goals by building cooperation with co-workers. Position reports to the Head of Acquisition Services. QUALIFICATIONS: ALA accredited M.L.S. required. The following qualifications are preferred: Serials management experience; experience with automated library systems, especially serials and acquisitions modules; experience with bibliographic utilities (OCLC); knowledge of MARC formats; familiar with current issues in technical services librarianship; knowledge of issues in electronic scholarly communication and experience managing and delivering alternative formats; planning and project management experience; record of service orientation; excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead and collaborate; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to meet deadlines and to work productively within an environment of rapid development and change; commitment to personal scholarly achievement and professional development. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment highly preferred. ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University is a publicly-supported urban, Research I university in Richmond, Virginia. It serves 23,000 students on VCU's Academic Campus and the Medical College of Virginia Campus.
