        UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME LIBRARIES

Position Title:                 Head, Serials Department

Reporting Responsibility:       Associate Director for Information Systems
and Access

Responsibilities:

        We seek a knowledgeable, creative and dynamic individual who can
manage the University Libraries Serials Department, which includes the
Serials Acquisitions Unit and the Serials Cataloging Unit, and who will
focus on issues and operations for acquiring, cataloging, and integrating
managed access to serials in all formats.

        With the active participation of the Serials unit heads and broad
and recurring consultation with other Library units, Head of the Serials
Department sets direction for the Serials Department, participates in
setting priorities for the continued development of serials applications
in the library automated system, develops strategies and plans for
achieving the Department's goals, and identifies opportunities and
resolves issues relating to serials work flows and activities across
library departments and branch libraries.  Additionally, this person will
play a leadership role in providing access to electronic serials in
various working groups.

        The Head of the Serials Department represents the Serials
Department as a member of the Library Administrators and Managers Group
(LAM), works collaboratively with other library departments and
individuals and on related committees and teams, and reflects an awareness
of the impact of both library decisions on serials and of serials-related
decisions on other library units and negotiating workable solutions.

        Members of the Library Faculty engage in professional development,
scholarship, and professional service in the University Libraries, the
University of Notre Dame, and the larger professional world.

Qualifications:

        Graduate degree from an A.L.A.-accredited school, and at least
three years of library experience of a professional nature, including
management and serials experience.  Broad knowledge of librarianship and
the ability to understand the work demands and goals of both technical and
public services.  An understanding of the methods scholars use to access
serial literature in the course of their scholarly research, teaching and
learning, and the desire to identify and translate trends in librarianship
and serial management into enhanced bibliographic and physical access.
Flexibility, proven ability to solve problems constructively and to work
effectively with staff and colleagues, good oral and written communication
skills, and a strong record of professional activities.

The Environment:

        The University of Notre Dame is a national Catholic teaching and
research university enriched with a diversified faculty, located in
northern Indiana ninety miles from Chicago.  On a highly residential
campus, about 8,500 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students pursue a
broad range of studies.  The University Libraries hold over 2.6 million
volumes housed in the central Hesburgh Library and seven branch libraries
serving the science, engineering, business and architecture programs, with
subscriptions to nearly 24,000 current serials.  There are 160 staff and
45 librarians. In addition to the Michiana Area Libraries Consortium
(MALC), the Libraries are a member of the Indiana state consortia
(INCOLSA) and the Northeast Research Libraries (NERL). For additional

Salary:

        Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience.  Minimum: $40,000

        Librarians are non-tenure track members of the faculty and earn 20
days vacation annually.  The University offers an excellent benefits
