Position Title: GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides expertise and leads the development of a library-wide GIS
management team. Working closely with faculty and students throughout the
university and with library selectors, develops policies and procedures for
the selection, organization, delivery, updating, and archiving of data
collections and software to support GIS services. Provides outreach and
markets data services and resources to faculty and students in all
disciplines. Provides reference service and user instruction.

Responsibilities

1.      Responsible for the selection of GIS resources and the
implementation of GIS services to meet in-library and remote user needs.
Maintains high level of awareness and expertise regarding spatial and
numeric data and its evolving applications.

2.      Provides GIS reference and consulting services to faculty and
students in all disciplines in person and via the world-wide-web.

3.      Markets GIS in the libraries and on campus. Works with the
Electronic Reference Services Coordinator to develop training programs for
library staff. Collaborates with the Head of the Map and Imagery Library and
the Bibliographic Instruction team to incorporate GIS into instructional
sessions for all disciplines.

4.      Establishes contact with faculty currently teaching GIS to determine
service needs; identifies software and data sets in use on campus; evaluates
service needs of programs on campus without access to GIS software and/or
hardware.

5.      Collaborates with the Head of the Map & Imagery Library and the
staff of the Digital Library Center in planning digital library initiatives
to provide remote access to and preservation of Map and Imagery Collections.

6.      With the Documents Information Technology Coordinator, plans for,
selects, manages, and coordinates the use of GIS hardware and software.

7.      With the Documents Information Technology Coordinator and the Head
of the Map & Imagery Library, designs and develops WWW-based projects to
enhance GIS and Remote Sensing services.

8.      Serves on library and university committees as appropriate.
Participates in grant development and implementation as appropriate

Qualifications

Required:

1.      Masters degree in library sciences or another relevant field
(Geography, Engineering, Urban Planning, etc.)

2.      Academic background in or work experience with maps, GIS software
such as ArcView, and geospatial map files, preferably in an
academic/research library.

3.      Computing experience in a networked environment.

4.      Demonstrated ability to lead team efforts.

5.      Ability to work and communicate effectively with users, library
staff, and the University community.

Preferred:

1.      Familiarity with electronic government documents resources, such as
census data and digital mapping products.

2.      Knowledge of systems design and server management.

3.      Experience with the development integrated, interactive Web resource
pages.

4.      Academic background in or work experience with Remote Sensing.

Documents

The Documents Department selects publications and maps from nearly all
levels of government and all countries. Mirroring this diversity, the
department is actually six units: 1) Federal (U.S. Government materials), 2)
State (Florida), 3) Foreign and International, 4) Florida Planning/Local
Documents, 5) Maps and Imagery (separate facility located on the ground
floor of Marston Science library).

Map & Imagery Library

The Map & Imagery Library is located on the ground floor of the Marston
Science Library. Most of the maps, aerial photographs, satellite images, and
atlases in the Smathers Libraries are concentrated in this facility. With
close to 400,000 aerial photographs and satellite images, and 2,000 atlases,
it is the largest map library in the southeastern U.S. and the fifth largest
academic map library in the United States. In addition to maps, the Map &
Imagery Library has an extensive collection of United States Department of
Agriculture aerial photographs, NASA/Kennedy Space Center film, remote
sensing images from satellites and a growing collection of digital map
software and CD-ROM products.

All types of maps are available in the Map & Imagery Library on a variety of
special topics from archaeology to zoogeography. The map collections are
worldwide in scope but the areas of emphasis are Florida, U.S., Central and
South America including the Caribbean, and Africa, South of the Sahara.

This collection supports instructional and research programs from across the
entire spectrum of the University of Florida's academic departments. The
more frequent users are associated with the Colleges and Departments of:
Engineering, Architecture, Political Science, Geography, Geology, IFAS, and
the Centers for African and Latin American Studies. Additionally, the
collections are used extensively by researchers from the Florida Natural
History Museum and various local, state and national governmental agencies.

The University of Florida

the Research Libraries Group, SOLINET, and the Center for Research
Libraries. The library staff, which numbers more than 300 FTE librarians,
technical/clerical staff and student assistants, plays an active state,
regional, and national role in CONSER and other library programs related to
automation, bibliographic control and preservation. The collections now
comprise more than three million cataloged volumes, four million microforms,
and extensive holdings of government documents, maps, archival material,
computer files, and other formats. The Libraries receive 25,000 current
serials and the library resources budget is approximately $6,000,000
annually. The University of Florida shares a NOTIS based integrated system
for acquiring, processing, circulating, and assessing its collections.
