I have the same complaint. I strongly objected to this a couple of years
ago when the prices first sky-rocketed. We cut $3000-worth of microfiche
subscriptions at that time. It seems to me that UMI is trying to imitate
spiraling paper prices. Could it be a case of, The market will take it,
we have a semi-monopoly, so let's get all the money we can? I told our
rep what I thought, and he said he would relay my complaints to
management, but of course it did no good. Maybe if others start
complaining, we could make an impression.

This was posted to ACQNET and I suggested he also post to SERIALST. He
asked me to send it along.
  Thanks, Eleanor Cook, Editor, ACQNET

Subject: Microfilm pricing

I would like to get some reaction from the list concerning the rapidly
escalating price of periodical back files in microform. Our average
price per title for microform subscriptions from UMI has almost doubled
over a 5 year period. This significantly exceeds the rate of price rise
for the print subscriptions. What is the experience of other libraries
in this matter, and what, if anything, are you doing about it? Now that
we have new space, we have begun to do more binding, but this is at best
a short-term solution.

Thanks.
