SERIALS & ACQUISITIONS ASSISTANT
DUMBARTON OAKS LIBRARY

Function:       Manages serials and monographic acquisitions for a
distinguished library (approximately 170,000 volumes) with world-renowned
collections in Byzantine and medieval studies, garden history and landscape
architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies.  SIRSI is used for all automated
functions. Reports to Head Librarian.  Dumbarton Oaks has recently
integrated monographic acquisition processes from three distinct library
collections and is about to integrate serials processes.  A new library
facility is being designed with completion expected in 2002.

Duties:
--  Manages over 1,900 serials subscriptions and standing orders (many in
languages other than English), including vendor selection, orders,
encumbrances, claims, payment of invoices, and bibliographic verification of
serials and electronic resources.
--  Manages firm orders including vendor selection, encumbrances, claims,
and payment.
--  In consultation with other library staff, analyzes, formulates, and
implements serials policies and procedures.
--  Resolves serial record conflicts and problems with the receipt of
serials and other continuations.
--  Leads Acquisitions Team: trains and supervises casual (part-time) staff
involved in ordering, check-in, and processing.
--  Prepares written reports and proposals, and compiles statistics as
required.
--  Performs related duties as needed.

Qualifications: Required: Three years' minimum library experience working
with serials and acquisitions functions (academic or research library
preferred).  Supervisory experience.  Strong computer skills, including
integrated library system experience (SIRSI preferred).  Ability to work
effectively in a collaborative environment.  Excellent interpersonal and
communication skills in order to successfully contribute to an evolving work
situation requiring flexibility and versatility.  Preferred: Reading
knowledge of European languages.  BA in humanities field.

Grade 52/53: salary $27,000-33,000, depending on experience.  35-hour work
