Hello Peter Vernon,

If all the "Standard Drives" are TL 15 then technically all the CT LBB 2 1977, 1981 ship designs can not be built until TL 15. Note that the CT LBB 2 Drive Potential table also is used for the Maneuver Drive and power plant.

Currently the only information I have found on the CT LBB 2 1977, 1981 Drive Potential Table for Jump Drives is in CT LBB 3 1977, 1981 pages 14-15 Technological Levels Chart.

However, CT LBB 2 1977, 1981 page 14 states that "... In addition, the model number indicates the highest level of jump which can be achieved by the ships. For example, a ship must have a Model/4 computer before it can perform jump-4, in addition to the proper size jump drive." Page 22 the Computers table there is a listing of TL requirements which indicates that a Computer Model/4 is available at TL A (10) and the note below the table is "...Mode; also affects jump ability."

I will have to go back and make corrections to the J-max analysis suggested by Phil Pugliese I am working on for the computer model and programs required to make a jump.

Also a thank you Ewan for your input of TL 12 which made me check on the computer requirements.

I believe, a long time ago, that I saw somewhere that all of the standard drives are tech 15. That is somewhere in a book. No clue as where though.

Hello Ewan,

The site ct-starships on yahoo Richard "Jason Barnabas" Flores shared the spreadsheet "Information about Analysis LBB 2 Engines in HG". I have looked over the spreadsheet but I have not figured out what the material is telling me yet.

I do not agree that the Drive Potential Table on CT LBB 2 1977, 1980 page 22 are all built at TL 15 since the CT LBB 3 1977, 1980 Technological Charts on pages 14-15 have Jump Drives Type A-D with performance levels of 2, 4, and 6 available at TL 9.

CT LBB 5 HG 2e 1980 established that the J4 drive is available at TL 12, however in CT LBB 3 the Technological Levels chart shows that by TL 12 Drive Types A-N are available. Comparing the CT LBB 2 Drive Potential Table with the CT LBB 3 TL Chart a J4 drive is available as a TL 9 Type B, TL 9 Type D, TL 10 Type H, TL 11 Type J, TL 12 Type M, and TL 12 Type N. The only CT LBB 2 drives that fit the CT LBB 5 J4 drive criteria are the Type M or Type N drive.

The CT LBB 5 criteria for a  fusion power plant is TL 7 while in CT LBB 3 fusion power is available at TL 8. In CT LBB 5 the reactionless maneuver drive is available at TL 7. In CT LBB 3 non-starships are available at TL 7 there is no mention of a maneuver drive. The CT LBB 3 the TL Chart has the Drive Types starting at TL 9.

Technically CT LBB 2 non-starship and starship designs start at TL 9 while CT LBB 5 allows non-starships at TL 7 and starships at TL 9.

Just read through this thread.

As far as I recall (and you would have to trawl the archives) the “standard” jump drives in book 2 are the most efficient drives you can get in CT.

Which suggests, and what I believe the consensus of the list was, that they are all built at the best tech level they can be (TL15), and then shipped to various shipyards as “standard” drives you can just buy “off the shelf”.

This then provides justification against different drive letters providing different jump distances in different hull sized (they are all TL15) so they can provide higher jump distances in smaller hulls, or smaller distance in bigger hulls (as long as you have the computer to back them up).

But what they are not is a TL12 drive that can provide jump 4, because Jump 4 is TL13.

The TL to jump range is in CT. The TL charts in the Traveller book have them defined, and they may well be in starter Traveller or elsewhere as well.

Best regards,

Ewan
