Hello Greg Carries,

I know of several military doctors that enlisted in the military as a way to go through medical school. My knowledge comes from having them as my primary care managers since I retired and being scene at a military hospital.

I can tell you that the US Navy recruits medical professionals to become naval officers. While there is a path for grunts to become MDs via the  Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, most medical Corp personnel were enticed to join after becoming doctors dentists other specialized medical professionals and nurses.

I do recall reading, at least twice, about Green Berets who were also MD's at the same time!

Point taken, and I'm hoping that Eric Rhude will contribute to the issue.
However... Herewith the first three paragraphs of the article:

In Traveller, the typical player-character that falls into the role of
party medic is simply the one that's managed to accumulate "Medical" skill
somewhere along the line - he/she/it is still an Army or Marine soldier, a
Navy spacer, a Scout, etc., first, and a doctor just by accident. But is
that realistic? Do the various armed forces grab J. Random Enlistee, and
teach him/her/it to be a doctor, or do they look for and recruit people who
have already trained to become doctors, and then teach them the basic
military skills that they will need in the service?
