Until MT there was nothing that said they had their own power plant, and
so no reason that they would or would not need external power.

Wasn't there an earlier post that indicated that MM wrote an article in '85 where he stated that it was the regular PP, switched into a special low efficiency, high output mode that 'charged' the jump 'system'?
Also, ISTR that MM wasn't much involved with GDW by the time MT came out, perhaps contributing to the decision to have DGP take the lead on that?
