This seems contradictory to what was said about it taking 1D weeks to charge and that dependent on the primary and distance.... it sure seems like either the ship flew around the systems *for weeks* without getting noticed, then after charging up.... jumped when it saw other ships... or the flavour text in JTAS 17 ignored the charge times....

Does anyone recall how long it took to charge the drive in Annic Nova? And how close did you have to be to a sun if it was using solar radiation? One would think being in the outer sysem would really slow that down.... (energy density would be much less)
GDW JTAS 1 p. 17:
"Originally sighted in early 1103, the ship immediately came to imperial attention by standing off the world Heya (0802-B687745-A) and transmitting on a restricted military band. Interceptors scrambled immediately, but the ship jump outsystem while the fighters were still at extreme range."
"Later reports placed the ship at Kinorb (0602-A663659-5) where it stood off for nearly five weeks  without any contact, and then jump...."
"Last known contact took  place off Dentus (0601-C979500-A) where  the local scout base immediately set five scout/couriers into contact. Although the  unknown immediately jumped,..."

Not so. If you take the LLB 2 1981 and HG view that jump drives need
power from the power plant, then the black globe charging the capacitors
replaces this power requirement. Therefore, it has nothing to do with
the jump fuel requirement, which remains the same no matter what.
Problem solved.

Well that depends on exactly what the massive expenditure of L-Hyd just before jumping accomplishes.
I believe most folks would say that what is accomplished is charging the capacitors.
In that case the same amount of jump fuel would NOT be required.
Just like with the Annic Nova.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Annic Nova uses a solar radiation collector to charge accumulators, some sort of giant battery?, that acts as a power plant to charge the jump capacitors and make a jump. Upon arriving at the destination the solar collector begins to charge the accumulators again. Of course if there is enough charge in the accumulators the ship can jump immediately.

Doesn't seem to need any L-Hyd at all, ISTR.
And it is 'CANON(tm)'.
I guess all the power to operate the ship comes from those collectors so it must be Ancient Tech, just like black globes.
Your are correct that there is only one design that does not use L-Hyd, which does seem to indicate that it is either Ancient Tech or perhaps the sophonts that built it did not get the memo that L-Hyd had to be used.

The Express Boat is also canon which does not have a power plant to charge the jump drive either, unless the power plant is built into the jump drive.
