The reason I never heard of that (which makes sense) is that the RCN is small enough we likely never have two large ships that need fueled at once.....

Tangent:
My Godson's dad was pleased as punch to get the R part of RCN restored and to once again wear Nelson's curl as part of his rank on his dress uniform jacket (and maybe on the epaulets on other uniforms). In the 1960s, we amalgamated all services into the Canadian Forces (and not happily for almost every serving member... my mom left the RCAF then). It was nice to see the reversion to the older ways some few years back.

I don't think its helpful but my Dad did these in the RN.  RAS (pronounced razz) replenishment at sea.  (I've only done it in a ship simulater on a naval base.  But from the bridge where it's quite exciting.)

Not only did they transfer fuel, cargo and passengers simultaneously as has been said but the RFA ship, Royal Fleet Auxilliary, could service two ships at once - one off either side.

Nice!

I remember my Godson's dad (Lieutenant Commander, RCN) describing UNREPs and doing 'emergency breakaway' drills during UNREPs. That sounded like a pretty exciting process. And likely limited by sea state (or at least vastly complicated by any significant sea-state).

Morning kaladorn,

MgT HG 2e p. 47 "UNREP System: This is a system designed to allow for replenishment and resupply of warships while in motion, and is vital to the function of squadrons in unexplored or hostile systems. The system includes fuel hoses, cargo transfer tubes, and other gear designed to move ordnance and freight between two ships (though only one of the ships is required to carry the UNREP system). Each ton dedicated to the UNREP system allows transfer of 20 tons of fuel, cargo, or ordnance every hour. An UNREP system costs MCr0.5 and requires 1 Power per ton."

Luminaries,

Hark thee back to the various versions and sources and hear my query:

Hast there been any version of Ye Olde (Or Less Olde) Rules in which the mechanisms to do ship-to-ship refueling are covered from a design perspective?

HasT there been, yea verily, any scribblings that smell of the lamp about safer storage of large amounts of fuel (for a tanker)?

If not, and one wanted to design one of these, are there any other proxies that might suggest the scale/power consumption/rate of transfer, and so on?

I am thinking a big fleet on the move might want to have tankers. Given J-4 or more in some systems, the fuel use would be a fair bit as would the jump engines. But you might be able to make up for that by having a LOT of external fuel storage as well.

This, forsooth, doth bring yet another query: Hast there been declared, by powers most righteous, a limit upon the size of tanks external and wonderous in Our sight? (I grasp that there likely are rules defining the impacts on jump transit with these external tanks, but I just wondered if there were any explicit rules like... oh.. can't build an external tank more than 50% the size of your craft... or some such)

I thank thee in advance for recollections and cogitations on these matters.
