ISTM that this stems from the original CT LBB's where the concept of jump 'grids' was absent.

I think the basic idea was that the jump drive projected a field (bubble?) from it's position in the engine area, that encompassed a volume around the starship.

I actually never thought about it but then I never bought into the jump 'grid' idea anyway.
