Ok, My take on WTF is jumpspace and how it works:

Nobody but grandfather actually knows all of this. At it’s height, the 3I had portions of this figured out, but not all of it at all. And, yes there is no such thing as a major race - everyone discovered, or was given some sort of prior art.

“Under” normal space, or between the brains of this universe and the next is a foam of extra dimensions/universes appearing and disappearing. This is fairly common knowledge with jump using races.

Grandfather was able to stabilize several of them in a feat of engineering. These correspond to the J-1 to J-6 layers. Each layer is harder to enter than the last, and takes far more energy.

The layers are somewhat tied to real space, in that they share a coordinate system. This allows a computer to map a transit through Jump Space from one coordinate to the next.

Jump Space is alien, and real space matter cannot survive there. About 80% of the jump fuel is used to create a bubble around the ship, which slowly ablates away as the hydrogen is destroyed. Yes, this resolves the “do I need fuel for a jump when I use my black globe capacitors”. IMTU yes you do. Annic Nova is :hand wave: an alternate jump system :hand wave: However at higher TL’s you can extrude an energy field that protects the ship (thus, smaller fuel requirements with anti-matter based Jump Drive’s at higher TL’s in Megatraveller.

Since the two (seven?) layers share a coordinate system, the flatter our spacetime, then easier the transition to Jump Space. Extreme space-time distortion can extrude into the jump layers. So don’t have a jump path that directly crosses a black hole, for example.

Some percentage of misjumps are just that - your path crosses some sort of unmapped black hole and bam - you are parsecs off course because you dropped out of one of the “safe” layers into an ephemeral layer that has different properties. Really bad misjumps might have temporal side effects. And sometimes the ephemeral layer just closes on you. But there is no “Sargasso Sea”, as when you misjump, you are basically grabbing a random layer that is not held firm, and exiting who knows where/when.

If Grandfather ever gets a wild hair, he could shut it all down. And one also assumes that he has special layers for his use - Jump.1 was his first successful attempt. Perhaps he developed one with a coordinate system detached from real space, or one with more hospitable environment - and can send his android minions where ever he needs them to go instantly.

So, IMTU curved spacetime can extrude into Jump Space, and you can use Jump to travel in time. However to repeat this sort of thing, yo’d have to either as much as Grandfather, or assuming that he cannot control that, know more than Grandfather.

The Final War kicked off when Grandfather developed Jump, and several of his children were experimenting with similar ideas - perhaps with Gates. IMTU there are a few ruins with Gates ;D, but they are point to point and undiscovered as far as we know.

Yes, it was documented in SJG's TNS dispatches.

A Terran Confed BC from the IW period emerged from a mis-jump in the 3I (SolRim)  c.1120's, I believe.

Most of the crew were dead & those who survived were described as suffering from varying degrees of "psychological problems".

Hi all,

Isn't there mention of an Interstellar Wars starship miss jumping to the future or past?
