p.s. I've known a few folks (my youngest sister was one & her big day was hosting the current ruling Prince of Monaco when his dad was still on the throne) who've tried the hospitality industry & none have lasted longer than 10 years so I think 35 years is a pretty damn good accomplishment.

Sounds like he is messing with you. As a person who does not speak the native language well, I can tell you that you can get away with a lot of stuff because of it. I don't do this on purpose but I could see someone who does.

No.  I can see it now.  Jar-jar Binks forced to do an honest day's work in a cantina far far from home.  His immediate supervisor is almost driven to murder before morning tea break.

I think New Guy really doesn't understand very much English. He acts exactly the same way - as if he understood what you just said but then responding in a way that shows he clearly didn't - when the conversation doesn't involve work at all.

I was finally allowed to speak to him in my google-Spanish Sunday morning, so he's not doing THOSE particular stupidities any more.

Instead, he comes up with NEW ones. Like after I left Sunday morning . . .

Our pantry ready frig has extremely limited space, yet he decides during breakfast clean up that he needs to store the bowl of Mini Moos (SHELF STABLE individual half and half creamers) from the coffee counter in it.

Never mind that he leaves the box these individual little packets came out of under the coffee counter (excusable perhaps . . . since he apparently never restocks the bowl, I doubt he knows that the box is actually there).

Never mind that he has to pass a stack of TEN (10) of these boxes - each covered on every side with ENORMOUS blown up photos of an individual Mini Moo being poured out into a coffee cup - in order to reach the ready frig.

Never mind that by storing this bowl in the pantry he denies our guests use of this item for the coffee we keep ready ALL DAY AND NIGHT (unless 2nd shift gets curious as to where the bowl went . . . which didn't happen, because it was still in the ready frig for me to find at 11:00 pm).

So I think that in addition to being illiterate, New Guy is mentally challenged . . .

Actually, I suspect that he knows he's routinely messing up, yet instead of admitting that he's lost, he looks around for NEW ways to APPEAR to be helpful.

I second the thought that 35 years is some achievement.

That's one way to look at it. In hindsight, I think it's more akin to inertia. I grew up in this industry (my family entered the nightly rental business when I was a high school sophmore), so it was always easier to just keep on doing what I already knew how to do. My "retirement" plan is to build/operate my own B&B inn . . . :)
