??? As I recall serfs received little if any formal education. Until very recently, in fact edcuation was reserved for the elites.

Someone with a remarkably romanticized view of what living a life “..roaming the wilds finding food on plants and hunting wild animals..” is really like.

Also someone who is male, and not the one doing the very hard work of preparing those wild vegetables (for example, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassava>, which would make these women shugilli!) and bearing children over and over again.

If the modern world is so terrible and education merely makes you a slave to Da Man why aren’t you out living a life as a ‘wild free human’?

If you are asking me, I like being able to save my kids from killer diseases but I also really like to go hunting and plant gathering on the weekends. I think I have a good idea what it would be like to live a stone age life.  Most likely  I would be dead by now. I am happy to have both worlds and get to pick and choose but our life has a high price of our daily freedom. Making deer hides into deer leather is fun but a lot of work. Making stone knives is also fun but you tend to get cut and that could be bad. Making shoes is also rather fun and takes a lot of time too. Shelters are really not that hard compared to building my dads normal modern house. I think that tropics vs here in Germany is also an interesting survival question. I would not want to try it on a new planet without training! Winter is also hard but with good planning, it can be done.

I think the true answer to your question has two sides. Addiction to modern stimulus (Even living a modern life in MT lead me to run for a city due to boredom after a year of it.) and lack of great women in the wild that would want to live that life full time.
