I just finished watching the first ep. And you're right. "Heavily-armed whackaloons" describes most of them fairly well. There are also elements of Firefly (Crazy Young Psychic Girl and Guy With BIG Gun) and Andromeda (Irritating Ship AI).

And the plot device of having everybody wake up from survival pods with no memory was interesting. They even managed to give the Ship AI no memory, due to corrupt - actually purposefully erased/deleted - data files. It isn't until the end of the ep that the AI succeeds in partially reconstructing her files, with appropriately dramatic results.

Definitely going to watch the second ep. :)
