Realistic space combat would be handled by computer control, with total combat times being conveniently measured in single-digit seconds (and that would be for a *long* fight).

Since this reality is totally lacking in playable drama for RPGs, most games ignore realism to a greater or lesser extent when presenting rules for space combat.
