Richard, I'm assuming that you weren't playing Squadron Strike because it doesn't have highly-detailed hit locations (at least in the sense that you seem to mean it).

All of the ships in Squadron Strike: Traveller come in 2D and 3D versions. Ken promises to stop coming to peoples' houses and beating them with lead-filled hoses if they won't play in 3D.

SS:T comes with a 55-page tutorial that walks players through everything step-by-step. It'll teach you how do 3D bearings, applying firing arcs in 3D, and maneuver your ship in 3D through a series of scenarios that start with a simple 2D match with lasers only and gradually works up to a full-on small fleet action with fighters and all the trimmings.

There was a series of posts in the Traveller Warganes forum on CotI that covered how the 3D system, movement, and combat work. You can pop over there to learn more.

How does this game approach the problem?

For whatever it may be worth:

I see that the producer of this is Ad Astra. IIRC, their previous games have concentrated maniacally on the orientation of craft relative to one another, since they use weapons and defenses with strictly-limited arcs of fire plus highly-detailed hit locations. I tried to play an earlier game but gave up without ever finishing the first round, due to insane complexity. Basically, they seemed to be trying to recreate a 3D video game on the tabletop.
