Deep meson sites make raiding your planet a very risky proposition for lower-tech raiders (e.g. those without their own meson guns), whereas even a very large SDB is vulnerable to a lower-tech force with enough missiles.

Hmmmm.

Maybe deep meson defensive sites are what allowed all those higher-tech planets to come through the Long Night without serious consequences?
