Thank you for the information about the "code duello".


IIRC on the show Mystery at the Museum there was a bit about the longest duel that spanned several years between a French Infantry Officer who did not let a French Calvary Officer who did not have an invitation into a ball. Most of the duels were fought with swords. The final duel used pistols that occurred in a wooded area and the Infantry officer won by hanging his jacket from a tree. The cavalry officer fired at the jacket and then was confronted by the infantry officer who had the other officer sign an agreement that the duel was finally done.

Wonder if it was the basis for Conrad’s story?
