This is the continuation of the series you're thinking about, which was Vatta's War. That was an excellent series. It felt very Travelleresque, particularly in that most of it was spent with the setting's FTL communications out of action (due to enemy action).

Vatta's Peace, on the other hand, is about what happens when Ky finally returns home. The first volume - Cold Welcome - was decent enough, if very different. This second volume was something of a let-down. As I comment elsewhere here, it felt more like reading an after-action report than like experiencing an adventure. For example, the main battle occurred largely off-screen.

Presumably there will be a third volume of the VP series, for which the above second volume would have been better published as it's first few chapters.
