Hogg has a first name?! Which book was that mentioned in?

And yes, there's a lot to be said for Hogg as Leary's /fraghta/ - except
that he's not exactly anything that one would want to admit to as 'chief of
staff'.

(And it's not unlikely that the reason I'm having problems finding a good
term is because the role as written for Jao doesn't really exist in human
society.

Interestingly, though, in the most recent book in the Jao Empire series,
one of the humans - who had started out as a rebel against the Jao conquest
of Earth, but ended up as a trusted advisor of the Jao that both catalysed
and implemented a change in the relationship between human and Jao - was
appointed to assist some Jao 'yokels' or 'rednecks' in acclimating to the
mixed society in a combined Jao/human exploration mission. In discussing
this role after dealing with a 'rough spot', he characterises himself as
having been appointed as the "yokels'" /fraghta/, and the Jao that
appointed him to the role stops and thinks for a moment, before realizing
that that was, in fact, an accurate characterisation. So, the role doesn't
_have_ to be as permanent as my original description suggests.)
