 Dear Folks –
  Phil said:>OTOH, I don't think you must
 have the humungous Bulk Carriers introduced w/ MT in order
 to have Tigresses, etc.>Commercial merchant ships up to
 20k DT from CT would be sufficient.>That would, IMO, be more like the
 18th century than the post-container cargo ship contemporary
 world.  Um, not sure what humungous carriers
 you’re referring to in MT? The Common Imperial
 Transport (Rebellion Sourcebook, p 80) is exactly the 20,000
 dtons you’re after… At jump-3, with 10,800 tons
 of cargo, that’s a LOT of stuff...

My point exactly, & even more cargo at J1 or J2!

However, I'm sure there's been mention, not too long ago on this list, of million DT bulk carriers carrying things as mundane as cement!
In fact, I recall reading a post to that effect more than 20 years ago!
It went like this;
"MT introduced the concept of vast bulk carriers..."
Bertil Jonell once complained; "In MT you seem to have entire planets dedicated only to the production of left-footed shoes & importing everything else!"

I always thought that the folks at DGP figured that if the TU had million DT warships then why not merchant ones?
