Having once seen a film of bison (buffalo?)
attacking lion cubs and completely ignoring the rest of the
pride that was trying to stop them, I can sympathize with
 your position.
However, the way I look at it is that the
K'kree world view is very hard, but also very brittle.
When the Hiver presented the K'kree leaders with
something which was the very epitome of impossibility,
doubtless with more or less subtle hints that they had even
worse planned, then that world view shattered, inducing a
 kind of panic catatonia.
And while the K'kree were dithering, the
Hiver continued to manipulate them to bring about the
peaceful outcome to the war that they wanted. Whether or not
the total extermination of the 'infected' K'kree
was intended by the Hiver or merely one of several
acceptable outcomes is a moot point.

I can agree with that but I would argue that it doesn't go far enough.

I don't believe a society that rigid would be able to suffer such a 'panic catatonia' w/o suffering a severe upheaval.
Now, if the Hivers have their tentacles imbedded so deeply that they could 'guide' the K'kree thru something like that then they really are well on the way to becoming another (semi)slave race like the Ithklur.
