Well, yes… and that’s how I’ve managed to get my fix of US Drama over the years (although BT is throttling availability of DNS resolution for some of the concentrators).
But my deal with myself is that I buy the box sets when they become available.

As to the ‘rules’, I don’t know for certain. It used to be that you couldn’t get a tape (say) of a movie until it had been on general release for about a year. Think that’s been shortened now; ‘Jason Bourne’ was released Monday last week.
With TV series it seems a bit more baroque. You won’t be able to get  DVD/Blu Rays until amy TV station that has bought the rights has had a chance to air the series. NCIS season 12 was released about a month back. Season 14 must be about due to start broadcast soon (first re-run of season 13 is finishing on Fox next Friday). BBC shows seem to come out Monday after the last episode is broadcast.
