Oh, it had lots of uses. Check on whoever is keeping watch, or just
sit around and gossip for an hour or so. Games and chores that could
be done without much light were popular too.

After all, in the temperate zones, much of the year you've got a lot
longer than 8 hours of night.

Hot climates could make good use of it too. Do some stuff while it is
*cool*.

A long running story on Big Closet that has folks transplanted from
Earth to another world long ago, made use of this. Foilks even
provided references from as late as the 1700s to people talking about
"first sleep" and "second sleep" in their journals.
