Dear Subscriber,
Good news for everyone who enjoys getting Victorian Times in its print form, Victorian Times Quarterly!
Victorian Times Quarterly is now available for the entire range of Victorian Times - July 2014 to the present. Originally, I'd compiled the first year of Victorian Times into two six-month "collections" (July-December 2014 and January-June 2015). Those collections have been discontinued, replaced by the "first" four issues of Victorian Times Quarterly.
Subsequent issues of Victorian Times Quarterly have been renumbered to reflect the addition of these four "back issues." If you've already purchased an issue of Victorian Times Quarterly, no worries; the issue itself hasn't changed. On Amazon, though, it can be a bit confusing, as I have one issue that shows up as both Number 3 and Number 8. When in doubt, go for the higher number; older versions should have been discontinued. (You will still see them "listed" and vendors claiming to be able to sell you copies at outrageous prices - please don't fall for that! Those vendors don't actually have copies in stock; they simply post offers for every ISBN that is issued, in hopes that if someone orders from them, they can find a cheap copy somewhere.)
You can find a full list of available copies of Victorian Times Quarterly at http://www.VictorianVoices.net/VT/index.shtml. This page also gives you access to the current issue of Victorian Times, back issues, and "sneak peeks" at issues coming up.
And now, here's what we have for September:
- Young Tommy Atkins: A Personal Experience (The Strand, 1891) "Tommy Atkins" is the general British term for soldier (rather like our "GI Joe"), and this article looks at the experiences of a couple of new recruits.
- Sights and Scenes of the New World: On a Mississippi Steamboat (CFM, 1884) Traveling from New Orleans to St. Louis on a Mississippi steamboat... "I am sorry to say a great deal of drinking, smoking and card-playing goes on, on board these steamers..."
- Model Menu for September (GOP, 1893) What to offer for this month's dinner party.
- Art Needlework (GOP, 1888) Beautiful embroidery patterns that work just as well today as they did more than 100 years ago.
- The History of Home: Domestic Ways Since the Times of Henry VIII, Parts 3 and 4 (GOP, 1887) A four-part series on the customs and furnishings of house and home, along with bits on historic cooking, costumes and more.
- Royal Menus (The Strand, 1898) Some glimpses of how the royal family dined in the 1890's, including the wedding breakfasts of several of Queen Victoria's children, and a luncheon enjoyed by the German Emperor (the Queen's grandson) on his yacht during a race.
- Mountain Sheep, Shepherding and Shepherds' Dogs (GOP, 1882) A look at the lives of hard-working dogs in Cumberland and Westmoreland.
- September Stores (Ingalls' Family Magazine, 1888) Recipes for the housekeeper during the preserving and pickling season.
- How I Furnished My Store Cupboard (CFM, 1891) On stocking up one's storage cupboard or pantry with essential cooking supplies, such as mint sauce, ketchup, mushroom ketchup, walnut ketchup, and celery vinegar.
- Soldiers of a Century (The Strand, 1892) Pictorial feature of Britain's military uniforms for the previous 100 years.
- September Lore (ILA, 1846)Country lore, customs and feast days.
- Fiction: The House that Jerry Built (The Strand, 1902) A careful look at the title will give you an idea of just how solid this "villa" turned out to be.
