Alternatively, for a slightly different sort of campaign, perhaps they
ARE technically compatible - all being built to the same
thousand-year-old spec(s) - but no right-thinking Vilani would EVER
"void the warranty" (why, the resulting ship won't even HAVE a proper*
warranty! *clutches pearls*) in such a fashion. Don't you know that
when you buy a ship, you use it until it finally breaks (swapping out
components as needed, yes, but always with new, factory-sealed
replacements that slot right in) and then discard it and buy a new one?
Doesn't it SAY, right on all the equipment housings, "CONTAINS NO
USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS"?!?

Cobbling together a starship from... pieces? You might as well try to
build your own freakish man-thing out of random organs and bring it to life!

(* "proper" being defined, essentially, as "for the lifetime of the
/manufacturing company/" - which, again, will run into the hundreds if
not thousands of years - and covering absolutely everything.)

ObRL: PC vs. Mac. ;)
