For a low cost I can get something that works pretty much anywhere, is easily portable, and is ready to use for anything from planned encounters to pickup games that are run seat-of-the-pants style.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not adverse to the kickstarter at all. Also, I cannot disagree that the work involved would be huge. I'm not a carpenter so I would probably farm that bit out to a friend. I might use glass rather than plexi as the cover for the extra durability. But as a Software Engineer / Programmer / Whatever I actually am, my definition of "work" may be different than yours. As a person who found his career writing very simple GM assistant programs for Classic Traveller, the allure is quite great. This also scratches a particular itch as most of my Traveller cadre has moved far away from our original home base. Extending a video based gaming table into a set of shared maps on the internet shouldn't be too hard. At that point one could game over Google Hangouts. Maybe I should think about my own kickstarter timed of course not to compete with this very worthy effort.
