I'd not worry about any sort of physical plausibility.  The Maghiz EMP
crossing interstellar space to eventually damage equipment on all the
colony worlds parsecs away is way more implausible than anything
you'll ever write.  Whatever it was, it was not an electromagnetic
pulse.  Those are subject to inverse-square law.  So just make your
rock something that protects against that particle-of-the-week and
you're fine.
