Actually, airlines are a *bad* analogy. Mostly because of the fact
that they run on schedules set by much faster communication.

The Free Trader bit is intended to be a direct transpostion of tramp
freighters into space.

Even now there are folks who will take trips on such. You get to see
a lot of backwater ports and other interesting places without cattle
car aspect of cruise ships.
