Howdy Bruce Johnson,

Back in 1997 I was starting my second career, which ended in 2009 by being
laid off, as a computer support tech at a local college and I don't recall
there being a standard program for anything. Of course there were several
programs that where written for Apple and Windows. From 2001 to 2009 I was
assigned to the software library and saw a lot of programs that where
supposed to layout books that had their own oddities.

However, deadlines and computers seem to have gremlins that mess things up
badly.

To this day I cannot comprehend what weird non-standard layout program would
take an asterisk and turn it into three characters '>|<‘.
