Well, looking at the modern recipes for the cocktail called "Navy Grog", my
_guess_ - and it very much is a guess - is that the original was simply
mixing the rum ration with the lime juice that led to RN personnel being
called "limeys", possibly adding whatever sweetener - honey, sugar,
molasses, etc. - was available to make the result palatable. Proof would,
obviously, depend on both the original proof of the rum ration, and the
amount of lime juice mixed with it.
